Science

In the Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science, learners will study seven mandatory units, including:

  • Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science I
  • Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Unit 3: Science Investigation Skills
  • Unit 4: Laboratory Techniques and their Application
  • Unit 5: Principles and Applications of Science II
  • Unit 6: Investigative Project
  • Unit 7: Contemporary Issues in Science.

    Note: Units 1,3,5 and 7 are externally assessed through an exam or set task set by the awarding body.

    Learners will also complete 6 optional units, including:
  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Human Regulation and Reproduction
  • Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways
  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering
  • Medical Physics Applications
  • Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis.
  • Entry requirements

    5 GCSEs grade 9-4 (grade A - C) Must, which should include English, Maths and Science (combined).

    Or a merit in an appropriate BTEC Level 2 qualification in Applied Science and GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above.

  • Who is the course for?

    The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science is intended as an applied general qualification for post-16 year old learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education courses.

    The qualification is wide-ranging and equivalent in size to three A Levels. It has been designed as a two-year, full-time programme of study. Learners who wish to take this qualification will have successfully completed a Level 2 programme of learning with GCSEs and potentially some vocational qualifications.

    A mixture of practical lessons and theoretical classes.

  • How is the course assessed?

    13 units of which 7 are mandatory and 4 are externally assessed through examinations and set tasks.
    The qualification is graded using a scale of PPP to DDD*.

  • Where Next – Further Studies

    The requirements of the qualification will mean that learners develop the transferable and higher order skills, such as evaluation, analysis and synthesis, which are valued by higher education providers and employers. For example, carrying out practical laboratory tasks, planning investigations, collecting, analysing and presenting data.

    The qualification supports entry for further study to other courses such as:

    • BSc (Hons) in Chemistry with Analytical Science
    • BSc (Hons) in Forensic Science
    • Higher National Diploma (HND) in Applied Science.
