Computing & Information Technology

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Information Technology consists of 13 units. The qualification carries UCAS tariff points and made up of a range of mandatory and optional units.

In the first year students will study and complete the following 6 units (optional units may be subject to change):

  • Information Technology Systems
  • Creating Systems to Manage Information
  • Programming
  • Using Social Media in Business
  • Data Modelling
  • Website Development.

    In the second year students will study and complete the following 7 units (optional units may be subject to change):
  • Cyber security and Incident Management
  • IT Service Delivery
  • IT Project Management
  • Big Data and Business Analytics
  • The Internet of Things
  • IT Technical Support and Management
  • Cloud Storage and Collaboration Tools.
  • Entry requirements

    5 GCSEs grade 9-4 (grade C and above) preferably including both English and Maths or a relevant Level 2 qualification at merit or above.

  • Who is the course for?

    This qualification provides a balance of business and information technology and responds to industry needs, enhancing your employment prospects.

    You study a combination of computing and business-oriented units. You learn to use current technology in communications, IOT, cloud computing databases, web publishing, etc. to analyse business problems and develop effective solutions.

    The qualification is designed to be studied over two years and is equivalent to three A Levels. It fully meets entry requirements for progression to an HNC or HND or a degree course in IT and related areas such as:

    • Information Technology Management
    • Business Information Technology
    • IT Management for Business, etc.
  • Study methods

    This qualification will take two academic years to complete at the Hayes campus. To gain this qualification, learners must complete 13 units. The course is predominately classroom taught although you will be expected to complete assignments outside of your classroom time and revise for controlled assessments.

  • How is the course assessed?

    Each unit is graded Pass, Merit and Distinction. There is one exam and one controlled assessment to complete in the first year. There are two more controlled assessments in the second year. The remainder of the units are assessed via a set of assignments.

    This qualification can directly prepare you for the following course:

    • HNC or HND in Computing
    • University degree in Computer Science or equivalent: such as BSc in Information Systems, BSc in Digital Technology Solutions, BSc in Information Technology Management, BSc in IT Management for Business
    • Apprenticeship or full time employment.
