You will be taught how to write formal and informal letters, emails, articles and reports. There will be opportunities to improve spelling, punctuation and grammar as well. You will read a variety of texts and improve your speaking and listening skills by practising discussions and short presentations on familiar topics.

Entry requirements
You should have an interest in the subject area you are applying for. There are no formal entry requirements but we will assess your level of English and maths to make sure you are working at Entry Level 3 or above. This is to ensure you are able to meet the course requirements.

Who is the course for?
These are part-time courses suitable for adults (over 19 years old) that have been out of full-time education for some time. Functional Skills is for students who need to improve their reading and writing skills. On the course, you will develop your writing of various pieces, which demand accuracy in spelling, grammar and punctuation. You will learn to write for real-life situations and gain confidence in reading, writing and speaking so that this will have a positive impact on future-prospects

Study methods
The course is delivered over 15 weeks of classroom taught lessons for 2 hours a week. You will be expected to combine this with a further 2 hours of guided study a week on an online platform called Century. Your teacher will assess Speaking and Listening in the classroom. At the end of the course, you will take an exam in Reading and Writing. All three elements need to be passed to gain the full qualification.
