Functional Skills Level 2 maths covers a variety of real life problems which help you implement mathematical skills. You will study different topics within these three areas:
- Using numbers and the number system – whole numbers, fractions, decimals and
percentages - Using common measures, shapes and space
- Handling information and data

Entry requirements
There are no set entry requirements. When you come to enrol, you will be assessed for suitability and to agree the level you can study. Prior qualifications will be used where appropriate.

Who is the course for?
These are part-time courses suitable for adults (over 19 years old) who have been out of full-time education for some time. Functional Skills is for students who need to improve their numeracy skills in order to progress in work and study. You will gain confidence in your mathematical skills whilst becoming more proficient at calculations that are relevant to daily life.

Study methods
The course is delivered over 15 weeks of classroom taught lessons for 2 hours a week. You will be expected to combine this with a further 2 hours of guided study a week on an online platform called Century.

How is the course assessed?
You will take an exam covering the topics you have studied which is separated into two parts: Section A: Non-calculator 25 minutes - 16 marks = 25% overall Section B: Calculator 1 hour 30 minutes - 48 marks = 75% overall. This is an externally assessed exam.

Gaining a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in maths will open doors to many career paths including teaching and accounting. Many more job opportunities are available to people who hold this qualification.

Where Next – Further Studies
Gaining a Functional Maths Level 2 can provide an entry point into a wide variety of study options from Access, an Apprenticeship, teacher training and many universities will accept Level 2 as an equivalent to a GCSE grade 4.
