Uxbridge College’s Health and Social Care Traineeship pilot scheme has proved a real success with three students going straight into full-time Apprenticeships.
The students who completed the new HSC Traineeship last academic year are now starting Apprenticeships in a residential care home and at a specialist College. Joshua Adeyinka (first left) and Sapna Shamen (fourth left) will be working at Grove House Care Home for the elderly in Harrow and Rana Alanazi (second right) will be working at West London Community College in Hayes, for adults on the autism spectrum. A fourth Traineeship learner, Phebean Clarke (far right), has been accepted onto the full-time Level 2 Health and Social Work Skills programme at Uxbridge College as a result of completing the course.
The HSC Traineeship, a Level 1 qualification, can now offer places to a new group of students - and thanks to its success, a Childcare Traineeship pilot scheme is now being offered too.
Charlotte Robbins, Course Team Leader Health and Social Care at Uxbridge College, said: “The new Traineeship programme in Health & Social Care has been a great success and we are very pleased to be offering it again this year, as well as being able to provide the equivalent course for Childcare. Traineeships are ideal for students who have an interest in a profession but need to build their confidence, employment experience, or essential education and skills, before being ready for an Apprenticeships or further study. We would be very pleased to talk to both young people and employers who might be interested in getting involved in our Traineeships.”
Last year’s HSC Traineeship (pictured) completed their six month course with placements at: West London Community College; Woodlands Care Home in Ickenham, which provides dementia care, respite care and day care, and Innovate Day Centre for the elderly community in Hayes. They achieved the City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care.
Traineeships follow a similar pattern to Apprenticeships, with students going into work placements and receiving on-the-job training, as well as learning theory, literacy and numeracy at College and gaining a formal qualification if successful. Learners entering Level 1 programmes such as Traineeships are usually those who have left school with few or no good GCSEs, or who are new to formal education in the UK.
