Lakjit Chand, an Uxbridge College apprentice at Ultra Electronics, is a real success story of Apprenticeship. Lakjit was highly commended in the Apprentice of the Year category at the West London Business Awards 2014 for his ability to display extraordinary commitment to learning new skills across departments. He was also recognised for gaining the confidence of his employer and colleagues which lead to looking after over £1 million worth of company machinery.

Lakjit’s journey to success began after passing his GCSEs. He aspired to achieve a Technical Engineering Apprenticeship within an established company that would offer him a genuine career prospect. In 2011, because of his determination, Lakjit became an Apprentice Production Engineering Technician through Uxbridge College at Ultra Electronics Sonar Systems, an aerospace and Defence Company in west London.

Lakjit focused on his training, gathering in-depth knowledge across various departments. He displayed great communication skills and became a reliable member in his team. Upon completion of his Technical Apprenticeship, Lakjit also received Ultra Electronics’ Apprenticeship Award, a recognition of his achievements and commitment. He has now been taken on full-time as a Design for Manufacture Technician.

Alongside his full-time employment, Lakjit is now continuing his studies in higher education, studying for an HND at Uxbridge College.
