Students who visited the £14.8bn Crossrail project as part of a week-long work placement have been commended for their professional approach. The students from Uxbridge College were part of a group which went on site at the Crossrail fly-over site at Stockley Park, near Hayes, as part of the construction industry initiative Budding Brunels.
Four learners from Uxbridge College Academy – the College department teaching GCSEs, A-levels and vocational science – were presented with certificates of achievement for completing the Budding Brunels programme.
Certificates were given to the students by Uxbridge College Governor Professor Mariann Rand-Weaver. Professor Rand-Weaver is also Pro Vice-Chancellor (Quality Assurance and Enhancement) at Brunel University. The participants completed a total of five days work experience, learning about construction roles for graduates, meeting engineering professionals, and improving their workplace and interview skills.
Amanda Washbrook, Head of the Academy at Uxbridge College, said: “This construction industry placement which included a visit to the Crossrail site gave our students a chance to be part of one of the key projects of our time. This was extremely valuable for them to be part of and we received very positive reports from the employers involved which gave the students an excellent boost.”
The flyover at Stockley Park is being constructed by Network Rail as part of the Crossrail project – the train connection from east to west London - which is due to be completed in 2017. Budding Brunels is run by the Construction Youth Trust, a charity helping young people in England and Wales to build better futures by giving them access to opportunities in the construction industry.
The students who completed the programme were: Temitayo Adedipe (19), Ranjeena Raveendran (17), Sharon Mazera (21), Mustafa Sulemanji (19) and Harkirat Singh (20).
